Blackmagic Design has just released firmware update 2.1 earlier today. The renegade Aussie company continues its commitment to improve the functionality of their 1st generation cameras as well as their latest cameras like the 4K URSA and Studio Cameras. The latest firmware update 2.1 mainly impacts the BMCC and Pocket Cinema cameras by adding the long-awaited lossless compress Raw recording on the oldest camera in the lineup – the 2.5K BMCC and some other cool bits.
Now the original Blackmagic camera joins the BMPC 4K and the Pocket Cinema Camera with mathematically lossless Compress Raw, which was added to the other aforementioned cameras in earlier firmware update releases. With the new compressed Raw a single CinemaDNG frame will be about 3MB in size, as opposed to the original uncompress CinemaDNG raw frame of around 5MB, resulting in substantial disk space savings.
Additional features in the latest firmware include frame guides, Japanese and Chinese language support, and peaking is remembered after shutdown and power back on. See more details of improvements below:

Blackmagic Design has released firmware version 1.9.3 for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and Pocket Cinema Camera. This update includes the changes we talked about with Blackmagic’s Tina Eckman at Blackmagic Day LA, including histogram and audio level indicators.
The histogram and visible audio levels have been a popular request for some time, and it’s exciting to see Blackmagic giving both in one fell swoop. Here’s the full list of updates in 1.9.3:
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
- Add histogram, time remaining and audio level indicators. Use Up and Down to reveal and hide the meters while Left and Right will adjust the aperture of your active MFT lens.
- Fixed bug where in-camera playback may sometimes drop frames.
Blackmagic Cinema Camera

For info on how to update your camera and get the latest firmware, see our video above or go to www.BlackmagicDesign.com/support
Additionally, we have been fortunate enough to have a Metabones EF-BMPCC Speed Booster and a brand new Carl Zeiss Distagon 3,5/18 ZE. This is HUGE because the Metabones allows me to now use all of my EF Mount lenses with out the crop factor which essentially required me to shoot a thousand miles away from my subject. Plus it has the added benefit of increasing the latitude of the lens by 2 to 3 stops. Look for a full review on both coming soon.
